Getting started

How can I learn about keeping bees ?
This is a question I am asked every week. Join a local bee club and go to a club open day. You will need to know if you are comfortable handling bees. Next do a short bee keeping course, the local club will run one.

You should buy a good quality bee suit. Do lots of reading about the management of bees. There are plenty of short videos on You Tube to get some practical knowledge. Bee keeping is international there are lots of web sites available. The local club will be able to connect you with a bee keeper that has some bees to start a hive.

Its very important to learn about your legal requirements, pests and diseases. Check your local council website. If you are in Auckland, visit the council website to understand their policy on keeping bees.

When is the best time to start a bee hive?
The best time to start a hive is between October to December.

Do you do hive inspections ?
Yes . Only in west and central Auckland ($60 for first hive and $25 there after).

Do you have a top bar hive ?
Yes. We have been running a top bar hive for 4 years and also have Langstroth hives as well.

Where is the best place to store a hive?
The hive should be in full sun, away from washing lines and neighbours cars. The bees discard their waste when they leave the hive. Check with your neighbours if close to a  boundary .

They need a close water source. Place a bowl of water with some rocks in centre close to the hive.
